The 2009 annual AL-NENA Gulf Coast Conference continued the tradition of offering a variety of sessions, vendors, networking opportunities and just plain ol’ fun to 9-1-1 professionals from not only around the state but also from the Southeast and beyond.
Four special guests from National NENA attended the 19th annual conference in Orange Beach. NENA CEO Brain Fontes was the keynote speaker for Monday’s opening session. He was joined by NENA President Craig Whittington, Southeast VP Toni Dunne and Private Sector VP Ron Bloom.

Although the weather threatened to put a damper on the conference, most of the predicted rain came in the evening and overnight hours allowing attendees ample time to run their toes through the sugar white sand on the beach, enjoy a hearty lunch on the deck Monday afternoon and devour plates of Baldwin County 9-1-1’s famous boiled shrimp Tuesday night.
The folks from Calhoun County who had virtually taken over the conference this year made a few changes such as moving the Lunch on the Deck from Tuesday to Monday and were praised for their efforts. Led by Lynn Wright, as Conference Chair, they kept up the tradition of having a top notch conference which most everyone seemed to enjoy.
The Monday Night Halloween Party also continued a tradition which began a few years ago and brought out all kinds of ghouls and goblins for an evening of karaoke, costumes, dancing and fun.
ast but not least, were the vendors who once again filled the vendor hall with their wares and helped support the conference activities through sponsorships.
So to sum it up, another great conference goes in the books and the people that played a part in it can surely be proud. The hard work by those involved once again paid off and was appreciated by the attendees.
