Alabama Chapter of NENA

Quarterly Meeting October 17, 2000

Orange Beach, Alabama

Welcome

President Dick Pierce called the meeting to order.  After proceeding with the Pledge of Allegiance, Mr. Art Faulkner gave our invocation.

President Pierce recognized and made presentations the 1999-2000 officers as well as the Conference Committee for the year 2000.  Vice-President Bill Brodeur presented President Pierce with a gift for his tenure.

Mr. Art Faulkner reported for the Nominating Committee.  He reported that Ms. Pat Hall (Montgomery LATA), Mr. Bill Brodeur (Past-President), Mr. Richard Holt (Huntsville LATA) and Mr. Ernie Blair (President) were our incoming officers for 2000-2001.  President Pierce swore in the new officers and turned the meeting over to President Ernie Blair of Huntsville.

President Blair welcomed everyone and new attendees were also recognized.

Presentation of Minutes and Financial Report from July 2000

Minutes from the July meeting were presented for approval.  Mr. Brodeur made a motion to approve the minutes as submitted.  Mr. Roger Wilson seconded the motion.  All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously.

Mr. Roger Humphrey presented the financial report for approval.  Mr. Seth Phelps made a motion to accept the report as presented, with Ms. Kelli Brasher seconding.  All were in favor and the motion passed unanimously.

Committee Reports

President Blair called for committee reports.  He also asked for an executive meeting to follow the regular meeting.

Mr. Phelps reported that there was nothing at that time to report from the Legislative Committee.  He did ask that this be the year to get busy and get the membership back active in assisting with Legislative needs.  Mr. Bill Meadows also encouraged involvement in this committee.

Wireless report was to be presented in a session following this meeting.

Mr. John Ellison had nothing new to report on neither the Public Relations Committee nor the Liaison/Internet Committee.

Mr. Richard Holt reported that he had received 190 agency reports during the recent Minimum Standards Survey.  He stated that hoped to get more information and involvement statewide after the new committee was appointed.

Ms. Kelli Brasher reported that the Database sessions presented had gone well with approximately 100 attendees in each session.

Old Business

Mr. Roger Wilson reported that the Red E. Fox costumes were in.  Mr. Fox had visited several members during this conference and was a great success.  He stated that one costume would reside in Baldwin County with the other remaining in Cullman, Alabama.  Each costume was reported to cost $2000.00 and each “borrower” was asked to be careful in the maintenance of this expenditure.  It was decided that “ice packs” would be ordered to assist in cooling the “characters” while in costume.  Alabama NENA agrees to pay for shipping to the “borrower” with the “borrower” paying the return shipping.  Mr. Ellison offered to keep a list on the Internet to check in and out this costume.

Mr. Wilson reported that several CLEC’s were now paying 9-1-1 surcharges.  Specifically was the company known as “Espire/ICG”.

Mr. Wilson also reported that the Public Service Announcements were running around the state.

President Blair introduced Mr. Jim Goerke, Southeastern Regional Vice-President.  Mr. Goerke discussed his involvement with NENA and his current position as Director of a 9-1-1 Commission.  He asked that each of the agencies respond to any research forms received.  He stated that this was the information needed to complete the Report Card to the Nation.  Mr. Goerke encouraged everyone to become an active part of the membership.  He asked that each of us join together to meet the new challenges presented in the industry everyday.  He stated that NENA was at a crossroad…and we needed to help decide what type of organization we want to be in the future.

For the good of the organization

Mr. Art Faulkner reported that on September 11, 2000, Governor Don Seigleman proclaimed 9-1-1 Day.  Mr. Faulkner proceeded to read and present Governor Seigleman’s proclamation to the membership.

Adjournment

President Blair reported that the next quarter meeting would be held in Calhoun County.  The meeting was adjourned.
