Area Code Overlay - 256/938

From Sandra Wall - AT&T E911 Service Executive

The existing 256 area code will not change, but a new area code of 938 will be added that will “overlay” the 256 calling area. The introduction of this new overlay area code will make ten-digit dialing necessary for all local calls. The mandatory date for 10-digit dialing begins June 5, 2010. Effective immediately, you may dial using either seven or 10 digits to complete your call.

You will need to notify your 911 equipment vendor of the pending area code addition with mandatory local 10-digit dialing. We would urge you to make the necessary local 10-digit changes to accommodate the new NPA as soon as possible. Your speed dial lists within your telephone sets, FAX machines and other ancillary devices must be changed by the mandatory dial date of June 5, 2010, but can be changed now during the permissive dialing period.

Your equipment vendor will also need to know that your Automatic Number Identification/Address Location Identification (ANI/ALI) controller will have to be able to recognize the new NPD digit of 1 (for the new 938 area code which overlays the 256 area) in addition to the NPD 2 for the 256 area code that is currently recognized. The NPD digit precedes the caller’s ANI and forwards this information when making your ALI bid to the host databases.
