Early Membership Drives
AL-NENA has been proud of the fact the state has consistently been in the top ten chapters in the nation with membership. In 1991 the chapter had 74 members earning a rank of 7th in the nation. Eight more members were added during the conference in October moving us up one notch.
A goal in 1991 was to gain enough new members to rank second in the nation. A membership drive was initiated to gain the 36 new members needed to achieve that ranking. Members were offered prizes for any new members they signed up. The chapter offered a t-shirt and koozie for one new member, the second new member would earn you a golf shirt and the third would get you a 9-1-1 cap. To enhance the membership drive even more, AL-NENA would conduct a drawing of the new members names, with the lucky winner receiving free conference registration and one night's lodging for the annual event.
By April, 1992 Alabama's membership had increased to 94, making it the fifth largest in the nation. As of January, 1994 AL-NENA membership had grown to 162 moving the state up to fourth in the nation behind Illinois (349) Texas (220) and California (189). The goal of moving ahead of North Carolina (150) had finally been achieved. Membership growth continued in 1995 and Alabama edged up to third in the nation with 364 members compared to 347 for Texas and 572 in Illinois.
